Mensaje por Fact and Fiction »

Buenos dias, Peruvian Beatle fans! Aqui es el francés autor, Eric Krasker. In English now: I have seen your very interesting topic dealing with the "Swanee River legend" and as I can read (better than speaking!) spanish language, I decided to register on your website and participate to this passioning discussion.

The Swanee River story is an old thing, you know. The song was mentioned for the first time in 1986 by Mark Lewisohn in his book The Beatles, Live!.

Then, in 1992 the German book Mach Schau! Die Beatles in Hamburg by Thomas Rehwagen and Thorsten Schmidt told us (thanks to the Polydor archives) that the Beatles, along with Tony Sheridan most probably recorded Sweet Georgia Brown on 24 May 1962, that the song was planned to be released on a single, and that the B-Side of the single was Swanee River. However, they did not say if the latter song was recorded by the Beatles or not.

Then, in 1997, in his book From Cavern To Star-Club, Hans Olof Gottfridsson found good evidence that the Beatles did record a version of Swanee River with Tony Sheridan on 24 May 1962 but said it was "impossible" to determine if this version was or was not the only existing version today (as Sheridan recorded it twice in those days, the first one was on 21 December 1961). And so the song was included on the EP accompanying his book which contained "four tracks with The Beatles and Tony Sheridan"...

In 2001, in the book accompanying the Bear Family Box set Beatles Bop: The Hamburg Days, Gottfridsson sudenly changed his mind (!) and said the existing Swanee River song was eventually not the one by the Beatles (so something "impossible" in 1997 suddenly became possible in 2001!), but he did provide NO justification or NO evidence for that – just authoritative opinion – which is absolutely unacceptable from the point of view of any serious historian.

In 2003, I published my book en francés : Les Beatles : Enquête sur un Mythe (1960-1962) in which I included many documents which were not published in Gottfridsson's book. I also debunked once and for all the "Swanee River Leyenda" and provided all the necessary evidence (coming from the Polydor Hamburg archives) to show everybody on what grounds was based this myth. Moreover, I demonstrated that Gottfridsson could have given the good information as early as 1997 if he had wanted to do so.

Fortunately, my book is now available in English language at last (since 1st October 2009), under the title The Beatles Fact and Fiction 1960-1962. Of course, it's a revised and updated edition and it contains 28 supplementary rare or previously unpublished documents. For this occasion, I got help from Mark Lewisohn who kindly gave me the until now untraceable 1962 article of the Mersey Beat where it is written that the Beatles recorded with Tony Sheridan Sweet Georgia Brown and "Swanny"!!!

A presentation of the book can be seen on the Canadian "Ottawa Beatles Site" (news from 10 October):

http://beatles.ncf.ca/news.html

Now, for those who are interested to order the book, please contact Roger (who lives in Merseyside, near from Liverpool) at this address where you have all the details concerning shipping in South America as well as payment:

http://www.beatlesfannext.com/Fact_And_ ... 0-1962.htm

Of course, I am at your disposal if you need any more questions.

Thank you very much, Muchas Gracias!

Hasta Luego!

Eric

Oh, I forgot : The song Tell me If You Can was written in Hamburg and it's the only Sheridan/McCartney collaboration, but it was never recorded for Polydor in 1961-62.

However, Tony Sheridan recorded it some years ago with German musicians, just for friends, as a "gift" !

Of course, all the details are in the book.

Muchas Gracias!

Eric

My pleasure, giancaac !!! It's pleasant to see that you are interested in the Beatles' Polydor sessions and the Hamburg days. Fascinating period! Besides, your synthesis about the "Swanee River Leyenda" is very attractive and very clear. We all must be modest in historical research you know, because new documents or new information can always invalidate or question previous findings.

It's also nice to talk with Peruvian Beatles fans from Paris!

Muchas Gracias!

Hasta Luego,

Eric

Welcome, Mr. Krasker. It's good to have a first-hand account of your investigation. A pleasure and an honour, really.

Muchas Gracias, Leonardo! It's also a pleasure for me to visit you in Peru (even through the computer!) and to share all this interesting information about the Hamburg days.

Yes Leonardo, that's absolutely true! This version of Tell Me If You Can was actually recorded in early 2007 with The Innocents. However, that was not the very first time Sheridan recorded the song in a studio. Effectively, he already recorded it semi-professionally with the help of German studio musicians. This extremely interesting version (and rather rare) can be found on the illegal CD The Complete Songs The Beatles Gave Away 1962 – Volume III (CDFRED 017). According to the CD booklet, the recording was done with the aim "to give to friends as a gift", and took place in 1997, but during a telephone conversation I had with Tony in early 2003, he confirmed to me that the demo tape in question was in fact recorded in 2001. Tony also told me that he had sent a copy to Paul McCartney in case the latter wanted to rework it and record a final version with him.

You're right, this song – which is a slow number – was written in December 1962 (during the last stint of the Beatles at the Star-Club) and was mentioned for the first time in 1977, in a revised discography compiled by Arno Guzek and C. Mattoon. In 1991, this is what Tony replied to me when I asked him if he was claiming the joint paternity for this number from Paul McCartney:"That's true, but it was also a typical product of that time and that situation, and it's not something that we're very proud of. I mean, I don't think he would like me to do it".

It seems Tony eventually changed his mind, probably because many Beatles fans were intrigued by this "mysterious" co-written song and eager to hear how it sounded like!

More details in the book The Beatles Fact and Fiction 1960-1962.

Muchas Gracias!

Warmest Regards,

Eric

Estimados amigos:
Mientras espero ansiosamente recibir el impresionante libro de Eric Krasker “The Beatles Fact and Fiction 1960-1962” quisiera hacer un pequeño aporte sobre “Tell me if you can”.

Although Ringo Starr was Tony Sheridan's drummer at the Top Ten in Hamburg for about three months (January to March 1962), he never participated to any recordings made by Tony for Polydor.

Take Out Some Insurance On Me, Baby AKA If You Love Me, Baby, was recorded at the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle on 22/23 June 1961 (not 24 June as commonly believed and falsely repeated) with Pete Best on drums.

At the spring 1964, along with Ain't She Sweet and Sweet Georgia Brown, the song was altered at New York Atlantic studios before being put on the US market, and supplementary drum parts were added by Bernard Purdie as well as guitar parts by Cornell Dupree ("overdubs"). This doctored version with an enhanced drum part was largely spread over the US and Canadian markets since that date and was often taken in for a version featuring Ringo Starr, although of course it's just a fake.

Although I highly respect Arno Guzek's research (which was at one time absolutely fascinating, serious and well documented), we must obviously admit that some of his findings – especially about Polydor – are now outdated.

Muchas Gracias!

Thanks (Muchas Gracias), Little Child! It's a pleasure to have this interesting discussion with you all.

By the way, I would like to show you the Tony Sheridan LP on which the "famous" song Swanee River appeared for the very first time. The LP is called My Bonnie (like the single) and was released at the beginning of April 1962.

It is one of the rarest LPs in the world (and much sought after by collectors) because it is the very first LP to feature two songs with the Beatles: My Bonnie and The Saints. The LP was also released in Brazil and in Venezuela (!) at the same time.

The example shown here is the Stereo one (237 112 SLPHM). You have to click on the record to enlarge the picture.

Muchas Gracias!

My pleasure, Giancaac. Si, si podeis ver las versiones de Brasil (Twistin') y Venezuela en el magnifico libro de mi amigo aléman Joachim Noske, The Beatles Covered – A Pictorial Journey Through Beatles Record Sleeves From Around The World, aqui :

http://www.ajonobook.com/ajonobook/Home.html

Aqui, el My Bonnie aléman original :

Good news! In agreement with my publisher (Atlantica/Séguier), the first 48 pages of the book The Beatles: Fact and Fiction 1960-1962 are now available for free consultation on the first page of the publisher's website. You just have to click with your mouse on the corners to turn the pages.

Gracias, Helter.Skelter. Thank you for your nice message. I thought it could be interesting for readers to see some pages of the book so that you could get a more precise idea of its contents. (Asi, es una cosa mas concreta). I'm glad you like it!

Thank you very much again.
