El teatro de los sueños: Dreamtheater

En lo personal uno de los mejores grupos de Rock que tuvo sus inicios en 1985, Cuando el guitarrista John Petrucci y el bajista John Myung encuentran al baterista Mike Portnoy en una sala de ensayo en la afamada universidad de Berklee en Boston. Más adelante se les une el cantante Chris Collins y el tecladista Kevin Moore. "Majesty" fue el primer nombre que usaron mientras se estaban acoplando, pero tuvieron que cambiarlo porque ya había otro grupo registrado así. También tuvieron una serie de problemas con el cantante, pasaron 2 o 3 más en la banda, hasta que llegaron a James Labrie.
"When Dream and Day Unite", es su primer disco en 1988, con la producción de Terry Date, el cual a pesar de las buenas críticas se le da un pobre difusión.
Ya compenetrados como grupo, con cantante líder y todo, en 1991 sale su segundo disco "Images and Words", el éxito no tardó en llegar y al poco tiempo ya firmaban para Roundtable Entertaiment, de paso, los mandó de gira a Japón.
En 1995, su tecladista Kevin Moore, se sale del grupo justo cuando Dream Theater comenzó a grabar su tercer disco, "Awake".
Para su cuarto disco "A Change of Seasons", se les unió Derek Sherinian, quien venía de tocar con Kiss y Alice Cooper. Este disco que en lo personal es mi favorito, fue el gusto de mucha gente, pues en el viene un Medley de 23 minutos donde reúnen canciones como: "Perfect Stranger", de Deep Purple; "The Rover, Achilles Last Stand y The Song Remains the Same", de Led Zeppelín; "In the Flesh", de Pink Floyd; "Carry on Wayward Son", de Kansas; o la incombustible "Bohemian Rhapsody", de Queen.
Su siguiente trabajo fue "Falling Into Infinity", el cual marcó la salida de Derek Sherinian del grupo.
El nuevo trabajo se llamó "Metropolis pt.2: Scenes from a Memory" donde ingresa el maestro Jordan Rudess en los teclados, que además colabora hasta hoy en el proyecto instrumental "Liquid Tension Experiment" junto a Mike Portnoy y John Petrucci.
En el 2001 editaron un triple en vivo "Live Scenes from New York". A comienzos del 2002, un set doble "Six Degress of Inner Turbulence" y en el 2005 "Train of Thought". Todos sus miembros realizan proyectos musicales paralelos.

Yo tuve la suerte de verlos en vivo el año pasado, y tambien fui al G3 donde Petrucci participó junto con Satriani y Johnson, muy buena banda, la verdad nunca me he aprendido los nombres de las canciones ja ja ja pero tienen varias que me gustan

Yo también fue a ver a Petrucci con G3, pero la banda era casi Dream Theater, puesto que el baterista es el gran Mike Portnoy y el bajista David LaRue, que varias veces ha tocado con los Dream.
Una banda de virtuosos, sin duda.

El pasado 22 de marzo la banda Dream Theater deslumbró al público que concurrió a su espectacular concierto en la Explanada del Estadio Monumental. No habrá batido récords de asistencia locales, ya que no es un grupo cuya música haya sido difundida en nuestro país, pero satisfizo totalmente a los conocedores.

Les comparto una triste noticia para los amantes del rock progresivo y, particularmente, para los aficionados de la banda Dream Theater.

Mike Portnoy ha anunciado que deja la banda Dream Theater, que él cofundó hace un cuarto de siglo y en la cual (en la última década) él ha sido parte importante del proceso creativo y de la dirección general de la producción de la banda. Su salida es comparada, tal como lo señalan varios foros especializados en rock progresivo alrededor del mundo, con la de Peter Gabriel del grupo Genesis en 1975; o la de varios miembros clave de Jethro Tull antes de la grabación del álbum “A”.

Portnoy alega que padece de agotamiento mental, lo que no es de extrañar conociendo el agitado ritmo de trabajo del (aparentemente) incansable músico. Por esa razón el baterista solicitó a sus compañeros de Dream Theaster tomarse una pausa para reposar y refrescar ideas; pero los otros cuatro integrantes decidieron empezar a preparar un nuevo disco de estudio. Ante esa situación, Portnoy “tiró la toalla” y ha decidido dejar la banda; lo que sin duda ha remecido a la escena progresiva mundial.

Precisamente tuvimos la suerte de ver al grupo (en pleno, en lo que puede ser su última gira juntos) el pasado 22 de marzo en la explanada del Estadio Mundial. Confirmada la salida de Portnoy de la banda, eso le da un sentido histórico agregado al pasado concierto; pues por esta nueva razón ha pasado a ser, sin duda alguna, un evento irrepetible.

A continuación les reproduzco el texto (en inglés) del mensaje que Portnoy ha dirigido a sus (ex) compañeros de banda y que ha compartido con sus admiradores de todo el mundo a través de la red:

"Wednesday September 8th 2010

I am about to write something I never imagined I'd ever write:
After 25 years, I have decided to leave Dream Theater....the band I founded, led and truly loved for a quarter of a century.

To many people this will come as a complete shock, and will also likely be misunderstood by some, but please believe me that it is not a hasty decision...it is something I have struggled with for the last year or so....

After having had such amazing experiences playing with Hail, Transatlantic and Avenged Sevenfold this past year, I have sadly come to the conclusion that I have recently had more fun and better personal relations with these other projects than I have for a while now in Dream Theater...

Please don't misinterpret me, I love the DT guys dearly and have a long history, friendship and bond that runs incredibly deep with them...it's just that I think we are in serious need of a little break...

Dream Theater was always my baby...and I nurtured that baby every single day and waking moment of my life since 1985...24/7, 365...never taking time off from DT's never-ending responsibilites (even when the band was "off" between cycles)...working overtime and way beyond the call of duty that most sane people ever would do for a band...

But I've come to the conclusion that the DT machine was starting to burn me out...and I really needed a break from the band in order to save my relationship with the other members and keep my DT spirit hungry and inspired.

We have been on an endless write/record/tour cycle for almost 20 years now (of which I have overseen EVERY aspect without a break) and while a few months apart from each other here & there over the years has been much needed and helpful, I honestly hoped the band could simply agree with me to taking a bit of a "hiatus" to recharge our batteries and "save me from ourselves"...

Sadly, in discussing this with the guys, they determined they do not share my feelings and have decided to continue without me rather than take a breather... I even offered to do some occasional work throughout 2011 against my initial wishes, but it was not to be...

While it truly hurts for me to even think of a Dream Theater without Mike Portnoy (hell, my father named the band!!), I do not want to stand in their way... so I have decided to sacrifice myself and simply leave the band so as to not hold them back against their wishes....

Strangely enough, I just read an interview that I recently did that asked me about the future of DT and I talked about "always following your heart and being true to yourself"...sadly I must say that at this particular moment, my heart is not with Dream Theater...and I would simply be "going through the motions", and would honestly NOT be true to myself if I stayed for the sake of obligation without taking the break I felt I needed.

I wish the guys the best and hope the music and legacy we created together is enjoyed by fans for decades to come...I am proud of every album we made, every song we wrote and every show we played....

I'm sorry to all the disappointed DT fans around the world...I really tried to salvage the situation and make it work...I honestly just wanted a break (not a split)...but happiness cannot be forced, it needs to come from within....

You DT fans are the greatest fans in the world and as you all know, I have always busted my ass for you guys and I hope that you will stay with me on my future musical journey, wherever it may lead me....(and as you all know my work ethic, there will surely be no shortage of future MP projects!)

Sin duda fuimos afortunados de ver en Lima al gran Mike Portnoy tocando con DT, quizás pase mucho tiempo para volver al grupo, pero nos ha dejado un gran recuerdo.
