Siguiendo un excelente aporte de TheWalrus (Entrevista a Cynthia (ex) Lennon):

4. Oí comentar a los Pet Shop Boys que su canción 'I made my excuses and left' estaba basada en tu ruptura con John Lennon. Me impactó mucho la letra porque narra unos 'cuernos' y la posterior ruptura, pero de una forma nada convencional. Es demoledor cómo habla de la dureza de la escena y cómo asumes la derrota, perdiendo la batalla pero sin perder la dignidad ¿has oído la canción? ¿realmente la escena fue tan dura y tú reaccionaste así?

Todavía no he tenido la oportunidad de escuchar la canción, pero curiosamente hace unos pocos días me dijeron lo mismo. En los próximos días compraré el CD y la escucharé.

La canción es la siguiente:

No era seguidor de ellos ni iba a sus conciertos, pero en el Perú una de las bandas locales que hacía "covers" de Los Beatles en los años '80 era el grupo "Amigos" (liderado por Edmundo Delgado, a quien conozco y quien organiza los eventos "Un Día en la Vida").

El grupo "Amigos" compuso y grabó un tema que editó como disco sencillo, titulado "Canción Por John" (dedicada, obviamente, a Lennon). El tema tenía buena influencia Beatle y era agradable, sin ser extraordinario. Pero la letra era sentida y de todos modos es el único tributo que recuerdo hecho a Lennon por una banda peruana.

Lo curioso es que (y lo comenté en esos años con Edmundo, en su casa-estudio de Balconcillo) la canción empieza con la melodía central de "For No One" -reemplazando el corno francés con un teclado- y termina con los coros finales de "He, Jude"; ambos temas de Paul, no de John. Pero eso no desmerece el homenaje.

Quisiera recordar la letra, pero voy a tener que buscar el disco y desempolvarlo para anotarla. Recuerdo que empieza "Cuánto tiempo pasará...", etc., etc.; y en los versos dice "Es una canción / de paz y amor por John" (con punteos de guitarra que emulan a los de Harrison en su etapa pre-slide).

Con el transcurrir de los años, creo que el tema se ha convertido en una rareza digna de interés histórico local.

La primera canción Davies dijo que era sobre el asesinato y el asenino, la segunda canción es un claro tributo a John.

No recuerdo si con el dúo "Pedro y Pablo" o como solista con su grupo Puch, pero el argentino Miguel Cantilo también le dedicó un tema a John Lennon en el cual lo menciona expresamente.

Precisamente este cantautor argentino y su amigo Jorge Durietz (quienes formaron "Pedro y Pablo") iniciaron su carrera musical tocando música de Los Beatles en fiestas y clubes.

Aquí otros homenajes a John Lennon:

- En 1987 David Bowie, amigo personal de John, editó su álbum NEVER LET ME DOWN. El tema del título es un homenaje expreso al ex Beatle fallecido.

- En 1993, la banda Bad Religion (una de las de la primera promoción del punk) editó su octavo álbum: RECIPE FOR HATE; el cual incluye el tema "Don't Pray On Me". La canción menciona el asesinato del ex Beatle en la cruda manera punk, resumiéndolo con la frase "Mark David did it to John".

- En 1996 la banda The Cranberries edító su tercer álbum: TO THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED (ya desde el título indicaba su contenido de homenajes). Una de las canciones es "I Just Shot John Lennon", que relata específicamente el asesinato. De hecho, el título del tema corresponde a las primeras palabras que dijo el asesino inmediatamente después de disparar cuando se le acercó el guardián del edificio.

- En ese mismo año (1996) Susana Hoffs, vocalista del grupo The Bangles, editó su álbum solista epónimo. Una de las canciones de ese disco es "Weak With Love", que también relata el asesinato de Lennon.

- En 1998 Richie Sambora (de la banda de Bon Jovi) editó su álbum solista UNDISCOVERED SOUL. El tema que abre el disco es "made In America"; y uno de sus versos dice:

"But I woke up when Lennon
Found the wrong end of a gun
He left his inspiration
Before he said goodbye
And we were alright".

- En ese mismo año (1998), el dúo holandés Acda en De Munnik editó su single "Laat Me Slapen" ("Déjenme Dormir"); en el cual compararon a Lennon con Jesucristo, con frases como "Same message, same haircut" (el mismo mensaje, el mismo corte de cabello). Lo interesante es que hacia el final de la canción la letra señala que los intérpretes pretenden ignorar que John ha fallecido, haciendo como que sigue vivo (¿o que resucitó?).

- El año 2000 Marilyn Manson (la banda) editó el álbum HOLY WOOD (IN THE SHADOW OF THE VALLEY OF DEATH). Una de las canciones, "Lamb of God", está dedicada a Lennon y contiene versos como éste:

"There was Lennon and a happy gun
There were words on the pavement
we were looking for the lamb of god
we were looking for Mark David".

Esta canción termina con la reptición de la frase "Nothing's gonna change my world", extraída del tema "Across the Universe". Cabe señalar que el single extraído del álbum (el tema "Disposable Teens") tuvo como lado B una versión acústica de "Working Class Hero", que Marilyn Manson sólo tocó en vivo una vez: justamente el 08 de diciembre del 2000, al cumplirse 20 años del asesinato de John.

- En el año 2003, la banda Ivory Wire (conformada por ex miembros de la banda Dovetail Joint, oriunda de Chicago) editó su á lbum debut: THE WORLD IS FLAT. Uno de los temas, "To The Very Marrow", está referido al asesinato de Lennon y narra el efecto que este hecho tuvo en el músico Chuck Gladfelter (compositor y cantante de Ivory Wire).

- En el año 2006, la banda texas Is the Reason editó el álbum DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE? La canción que da nombre al disco es un homenaje a John; y es supuestamente la última frase (pregunta) que Lennon escuchó antes de expirar.

Aunque en líneas generales no me gusta la música de Elton John, salvo contadas excepciones, aqui les presento un tema en homenaje a John Lennon que agrada a un importante número de personas. El tema "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)" es un tema compuesto por la dupla Elton John - Bernie Taupin; y es otro tema en homenaje a John, pero en esta ocasión hecho por un músico que grabo y compartió escenario con el mismo John Lennon.

El tema aparece en el album de abril de 1982, llamado "Jump Up!" de Elton John. El músico dio un concierto homenaje a Lennon en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York en agosto de ese mismo año. En aquella ocasión estuvo acompañado por Yoko y Sean en el escenario, como parte del homenaje.

Sin embargo antes de esa fecha, el 19 de marzo de 1982, John toca el tema en un concierto en Sidney, Australia con el acompañamiento en guitarra y voces, nada menos que de George Harrison. Concierto grabado y filmado, pero no disponible en ningun bootleg hasta la fecha.
